How to slow the signs of ageing
Keep your skin well hydrated
Moisturising is the most crucial part of any male grooming routine long-term, as skin aging becomes more of an issue. The older we get and the more sun and pollution we are exposed to, the more the skin’s natural moisture – collagen – dries out. Then, just like a dry riverbed, it begins to crack and line. Using moisturiser helps to replenish the skin’s natural hydration levels and prevent premature aging.
Apply creams after each time you wash your face and try to avoid sun damage and you will retain the young-looking skin they are always harping on about in the adverts on telly. Some people have different creams for night and day but generally speaking you will need just two moisturisers for the face:
- A dedicated eye cream for the very fine and delicate skin around the eye area. Apply this sparingly and very gently under the eye and around to the sides where crow’s feet develop.
- Then you’ll need a face cream that works with your skin type. Without getting too confusingly technical about it, the general rule of thumb is, the greasier your skin, the lighter your moisturiser should be, i.e. the quicker it will be absorbed. Drier skins that don’t produce so much oil will need a thicker cream that takes longer to absorb. People with T-zone skin (greasy forehead, nose and chin) should avoid applying too much cream in these areas as it can lead to shiny skin and even spots.
Even on the dullest, cloudiest day, ultra-violet rays from the sun can accelerate skin aging so it is advisable to choose a moisturiser with a built-in SPF of 15. But at the very least you should check to make sure the product contains anti-oxidants which help neutralise the aging effects of things called free radicals which are found in pollution and smoke.
Some people also like to use a body moisturiser, especially if they shower often due to sport or if they want to keep a tan for longer or to stop the skin from peeling after being in the sun. Cocoa butter is a very effective and pleasant smelling body moisturiser, especially for black skins.
There are plenty of other lifestyle factors that accelerate skin aging. As well as staying out of the sun, try and limit your exposure to smoke. Avoid stress and make sure you get enough sleep. Don’t drink too much alcohol and ensure that you get the requisite amount of vitamins and minerals from a healthy diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables.
